The Bible - The "Dumbed-Down Word of God"

Have you ever tried to tell the story of the conception and birth of Jesus to a group of 4 and 5 year olds? Would you simply read this from the King James Version of the Bible? You could surely try, but it's going to be a waste of time as the children won't understand any of it. You have to put it in words and concepts a young child can understand.

If you think about it - the Bible itself is this way. It's been put in words and concepts that we, as humans, can understand. God "dumbed it down" for us.

No man can truly understand God. Who and what and why and when and how He is - it is all much too complex for our minds to comprehend. We try to put Him into a box - try to make Him into something that makes sense to us. But it is impossible. And, if we believe that He can fit into that box... we are disrespecting Him and not accepting the extent of His being - His grace, and love... His omnipotence, and omniscience, and omnipresence.

But, God understands that He is beyond our understanding. However, He does want us to understand, at least to a degree. He wants us to learn. He wants to guide us and teach us. And so, just as the preschool Sunday School teacher, He "dumbs it down" for us. He gives us the Bible - a book which is written in concepts and words the average person can understand. A book which describes almost every trial and situation we will find ourselves facing, even in this day and age.

We are His children, and He wants to teach us. So.. quit reading my blog, go open up your Bible, and let our God, through the Holy Spirit, teach you.

Good night and God bless!

  1. I enjoyed your post, thanks. It has a grabbing headline, it's short and punchy and best of all it "makes God big".

  2. Great post (as usual), and I especially like the image you picked. I think that's exactly what the Bible is - a very simple, easy to understand handbook given to us to get through this life. Many people try to make it more complicated than it really is, but God's intent isn't to complicate things, but draw us closer to Him by showing us the way to true relationship with Him.

    1. Thanks for the comment, David! I agree, too many people try to make the Bible more complicated than it is. This Bible we've been given - it is such a wonderful guide, if we choose to read it. There isn't a trial we've done through (I don't think) that can't be found within its pages. There isn't a need we have that can't be found its pages. God bless!
